HOBAN CALLS FOR AMHERST TOWN TAX CUT AND OUTLINES BUDGET GOALS
Amherst, NY – 5/21/2025: Dennis Hoban, the endorsed Conservative candidate for Amherst Supervisor, announced today a proposal for a 5% reduction in the tax levy. The current Amherst town budget stands at $164.9 million.
Hoban’s plan focuses on four key actions to achieve the tax reduction:
- Recoup Westwood Facility Costs: Erie County must implement a proper lease agreement for the Westwood facility to recover the $7.8 million Amherst taxpayers invested in it.
- Address Patronage Positions: Hoban emphasized that the current administration has added numerous non-civil service patronage positions, costing the town approximately $3 million annually. These positions will be closely scrutinized for potential reduction or elimination.
- Reduce Waste and Duplication: A comprehensive review of all major purchases and travel expenses will be conducted to identify and eliminate unnecessary spending.
- Public Approval for Major Purchases: Hoban is calling for public referendums for all Town of Amherst real property purchases over $2.5 million. Under the Kulpa/Lavin administration, several costly acquisitions were made, including the Westwood property for $7.8 million, the Royal Parkway Sports Complex for $7.1 million, and the Maple Rd. Gun Club property for $6.0 million. Additionally, $33 million is being allocated for an LED street light conversion program.
“For the past two years, I have stood up for Amherst taxpayers. It’s time for a change in leadership that puts taxpayers first,” said Hoban. “I am committed to responsible budgeting and ensuring that every dollar is spent wisely.”
